- Fr. Andrew Greeley
Andrew Greeley was a prolific, sometimes controversial, author and sociologist.
He was born February 5, 1928, in Oak Park, Illinois, and studied at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago on this day in 1954. Fr. Greeley later earned his doctorate in sociology at the University of Chicago.
As an author, he wrote more than 50 best-selling novels and 100 non-fiction books. His books earned him millions of dollars, most of which he donated to the Church and to charity.
As a sociologist, he worked with the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, and also taught sociology at the University of Arizona.
Fr. Greeley died in his sleep in 2013, after fracturing his skull in an accident nearly five years earlier.
