There is no simpler, more beautiful, more refreshing way of praying than simply to give thanks to God.
You don't give thanks to God to flatter God.
God doesn't need flattery.
Your giving thanks to God is more like six-year-olds giving their mothers dandelions on Mother's Day. The children aren't flattering them, cajoling them. They simply recognize (especially on that day) how much their mothers love them, and how much they love their mothers.
You know how a mother feels when her child gives that simple gift? Well, that's how God feels when you give thanks. You know how children feel when they give their gift? That's how you feel when, from your heart, you give thanks to God.
You can give thanks to God for all sorts of things - sunshine, a cup of coffee, a roof over your head when it's raining.
When you thank God, you get in touch with the deepest, most beautiful truths of your faith.
When you say thanks, you experience the goodness of God.
It is indeed right and good to give God thanks and praise.
