An aide to Moses, Joshua was chosen by God to lead the Israelites into Canaan (after Moses was told by God that he would never enter the Promised Land). The Book of Joshua tells about the Israelites entering the Promised Land in the 13th century BC.
THe Old Testament says that Joshua was the son of Nun, and a member of the tribe of Ephraim. After the fall of Jericho, the Talmud says that Joshua married Rahab, a prostitute who had hidden Joshua and his men from the king of Jericho. The Bible says that Joshua died at the age of 110.
At the time of Jesus, Joshua was a relatively common name. In modern times, it is still a popular baby name for boys, ranking 33rd on some name charts in 2015.
