The three holy oils (Oil of the Sick, Oil of the Catechumens, Sacred Chrism) expresses God's tender and loving care, and are always fresh. At the Chrism Mass, the bishop blesses a new set of oils each year.
The Mass is attended by representatives from each of the parishes in the diocese. They receive a portion of each of the blessed oils and bring them back to their parishes.
At the parish Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday evening, these oils are brought forward in procession and formally "received" by the pastor on behalf of the entire parish.
