- Dorothy Day
The story is often told that one day Dorothy Day was approached by someone who was upset by the money being spent to build a beautiful church.
Shouldn't the money be given to the poor instead of being spent on a building? she was asked.
The poor need bread, Dorothy Day agreed, but they also need and deserve beauty as well. She said that if a church was dedicated to God, then it was a clear sign of God's presence among the poor.
On this day in 2000, the Vatican agreed to begin her canonization process.
