The oldest evidence of a Christian labyrinth can be found in a mosaic at the ancient Basilica of Reparatus in Orleansville, Algiers, that dates back to the fourth century. In the Middle Ages, prayer labyrinths grew in popularity across Europe (since it was too dangerous to travel to the Holy Land at the time). Folks would walk a "journey to Jerusalem" at a nearby cathedral on its labyrinth (many of which were dedicated to Mary).
One of the most famous prayer labyrinths can be found in the Cathedral of Chartres in France.
