Yet Isabel of France chose to live a decidedly unroyal life. She refused offers to marry. She chose to live simply, fasting three times a week, and sending her dinner to the poor. She cared for the sick.
After the death of her mother, Queen Blanche, Isabel founded a convent of the Order of St. Clare, which was named the Franciscan Monastery of the Humility of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Isabel died on this day in 1270.
Isabel's brother was King Louis IX of France, who is also a saint.
