Apostles are those who are sent. For Catholics, it refers to the twelve men chosen by Jesus as the first leaders of the Church. These men were sent to preach the Good News and received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. They also became the first bishops and, as a result, all bishops since have been referred to as the “Successors of the Apostles.” In a way, though, we are all called to be successors to the apostles as, by our baptism, we have all been sent into the world to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. We all should be apostles to those we meet each day and share Christ’s love. This is the essence of what it means to be an apostle: to represent Christ to everyone you meet. How are you going to be an apostle today?
