Who were the people that Jesus called by the Sea of Galilee? Fishermen - all four of them, Simon Peter, Andrew, James and john would not have looked any different than any of the townspeople. They didn't look "pious". They were regular folks.
What did Jesus ask them to do? Follow him. He didn't have any job description, any particular role. It was a personal association with Jesus Christ.
When Jesus called them, what were they doing? They were fishing. They were working.
Where were they? On the seashore. Two of them were in the boat, mending nets; the other two were standing on the seashore, throwing nets into the sea. They were not on some mountain top or in the synagogue.
How did Jesus call? It wasn't a commandment ("thou shalt ...") nor a passing suggestion ("you might think about ..."). He said, "Come, follow me." It was a personal invitation to each of them.
We're in the same boat (so to speak) as the disciples. We have been personally called by Jesus to associate with him, to do something that no one else can do, and to do something we may never see finished.
Lord, we don't always understand what you're doing or what you're asking of us. But you called and we're glad to be called. We're with you.
