Jesus is not being pietistic or naive.
He is not telling us simply to pray and everything will be all right. We do have to take realistic steps in order to handle the necessities of life for ourselves and anyone else for whom we are responsible.
What Jesus is talking about is a basic attitude toward life.
Despite our many concerns involving money and material goods, Jesus is telling us that we should not consume all our psychic energy, worrying and fretting and growing anxious about these things.
Life is too short for that.
We are called to be pilgrims journeying to a wonderful destiny. It would be a shame to waste this journey by worrying all the time about accumulating things.
We are called to be givers, to go outward on our life, rather than cautiously clutching everything - our time, our talent, our treasure - to ourselves.
Are you enjoying the adventure of being generous?
