Elijah was noted for his emphasis on the Lord as the one and only God. Because he was loyal to God, he fell into disfavor with King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. When Jezebel (a pagan) introduced rituals of the good Baal into the court, Elijah's strong objections forced him to flee for his life to Mt. Horeb (also known as Mt. Sinai).
The second Book of Kings describes how Elijah left the earth in a fiery chariot, which gave rise to the belief that he did not die but would return before the end of the world.
