In those chapters is the story of creation (which happened literally billions of years ago) and the first human beings. The story talks about sin - not only Adam and Eve's failure, but also Cain's murder of Abel.
The next chapters contain stories with identifiable historical roots. The first of these is the call of Abraham, whose original name was "Abram." His wife Sarah had trouble conceiving so her servant, Hagar, bore Abraham a son. Abraham named the child Ishmael, which means "God hears."
