- St. John Vianney
Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney was born May 8, 1786, near Lyons, France.
As a youngster, he worked on a farm, but taught other children about their faith. When he entered the seminary, he struggled with his studies. After his ordination, he was assigned to a small parish in Ars where he worked for 40 years as a parish priest. He was known for his preaching, prayer and good works.
He died August 4, 1859.
St. John Vianney is best known as the patron saint of priests, but he is also the patron saint for people suffering from depression. Hundreds of people would come to him for confession or spiritual direction, but John was overwhelmed by the responsibility. He feared he wasn't capable or worthy of doing hem much good. When he would become depressed, John turned to God for help and comfort.
