According to a Knights of Columbus-Marist poll taken in 2013, nearly six out of 10 Americans plan to attend church services on Easter Sunday. That figure jumps to seven out of 10 for Catholics.
The word "Easter" comes from a pagan festival of spring celebrated by the Saxons, commemorating the goddess "Eastre" (sometimes spelled "Oestre"). Her symbol was the rabbit.
From early time, the egg was a symbol of re-birth. The exchange of eggs was a springtime custom in some cultures. They were sometimes wrapped in gold leaf. Peasants would color eggs by boiling them with the leave or petals of certain flowers.
