When, during his earthly life, Jesus sent the disciples to preach in various towns, he couldn't go with all of them.
He could go to one town with whomever was going there. But he couldn't go with the one and with the others too.
But, after the Ascension, he was no longer limited by space and time. He could be with them always.
He could be close to them, spirit to spirit.
Notice the last line of today's Gospel. After Jesus has ascended to heaven, the text says: The disciples went forth and preached everywhere, "while the Lord worked with them."
The Ascension of Jesus is about presence - a new kind of presence - not absence.
