It was generally rural, as opposed to the more urban character of the southern region (Judea) where Jerusalem was located. Judeans tended to look down on Galileans. In Matthew's account of Peter's denials, the bystanders accuse him of being with "Jesus the Galilean" and say that even his northern accent gives him away.
Jesus, though born in the southern town of Bethlehem, spent almost his entire life up north in the region of Galilee. Most of the events in the Gospels take place in Galilee.
