In ancient Israel, burial practices reflected Jewish beliefs:
- Individuals were to be buried; cremation was part of the punishment for criminals and enemies of Israel.
- Not to be buried was considered a curse and dishonor.
- Burial had to occur within 24 hours of death.
- The body of the deceased person was to be washed, anointed with oils, wrapped in linen, and placed on a stone shelf carved into the wall of the tomb.
- The person was to be buried outside the village where the individual lived.
- The individual was to be buried in a family tomb.
