- Pope Francis whose first papal Mass was held March 19, the traditional feast of St. Joseph
On November 13, 1962, St. John XXIII added St. Joseph's name to the Roman Canon, to be effective the following December 8.
It's said that the Holy Father made the decision when, three days earlier during the first session of the Second Vatican Council, the elderly Bishop, Peter Cule of Mostar, Yugoslavia, was treated rudely by other council fathers after making the same suggestion in a long, rambling, often disjointed speech at the council.
The pope knew Bishop Cule personally. He was aware that older man's persecution in Hungary by the Communists had left him with poor health, and that it had been an effort for the bishop to travel to Vatican City for the council.
Because March 19 fell on the Third Sunday of Lent this year, the feast of St. Joseph is celebrated today.
