Pilate had asked if Jesus was the "King of the Jews," and Jesus now responds by discussing his kingdom.
It is not the political/military sort of kingdom that Pilate has in mind. It is not "here," for it goes far beyond this world, this universe. The kingdom of Jesus will be realized when all creation is at one with God ... when there is peace, justice ... when truth prevails over falsehood ... when light overcomes all darkness.
In this perspective, the fact that Pilate could put Jesus to death is inconsequential. Death is a small detail, a passing event, temporary, like a summer squall that lasts only a short time.
Jesus doesn't need guards to protect him from this death which now seems likely to happen (actually, it's only a few hours away). He has come to bring a life that is larger than death.
Let the great powers build their sand castles. Jesus is preparing a kingdom that includes all creation ... and lasts forever.
It would be fascinating to talk to the Lord and hear more about this kingdom of his. It could give you a whole new perspective on whatever is going on this week.
