As you stand there and hear Jesus say to Peter, "Follow me," you immediately think of something that Jesus said to Peter just a few days earlier at the Last Supper.
Simon Peter said to Jesus, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered him, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later." Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times."
Now, here is the risen Lord telling Peter to follow him, as indeed he will. Peter will ultimately fulfill the words he spoke to Jesus at the Last Supper: "I will lay down my life for you." He didn't know back then that he would first fall on his face and fail terribly. He didn't know how much he would need the Lord's help - and the Lord's forgiveness.
You want to get in on the conversation. There have been failures in your life ... failures for which you have no one to blame but yourself. The Lord knows that. You want the Lord to look at you and say, with the same confidence that he says to Peter, "Follow me."
