Pilate had no idea what Jesus meant when he spoke about his kingdom. Pilate could only think in this world's terms. He says, "Then you are a king?" The meaning of Jesus' response to that is: "That's your terminology."
Jesus then goes on to talk about his "kingship." He has come to earth from above. He has seen the Father and heard the Father. That is why he is "the way, the truth, and the life."
Call him "king" if you want, but that always has to be explained. Call him "truth" and you need no qualification. He has come from God, and he can testify to the truth.
What will Pilate do now? He will hedge: "What is truth?"
This isn't a philosopher probing for truth. This is a Roman governor tossing off the question to end the conversation.
What is truth? It's what we were made for, like a fish for water. It's what God is, and we were made for God.
There is a "pull" in us toward the truth, toward God. It's there, in you, much like an infant is drawn to its mother. It's God's gift.
Have you experienced this pull inside your life? Do you sense it now? Go with it, towards truth, towards God. It's a natural.
