Alleulia is a word that we hear so often, we sometimes fail to think about what it really means. Originating with the ancient Hebrew people, it is a term which expresses thanksgiving, praise and joy to God. It is used throughout the Psalms and is found in both the Divine Office and the Mass. It is especially associated with the Easter season as way of expressing our unending joy at Jesus’s Resurrection and defeat of death and sin. For similar reasons, it is not used during Lent as its joyful nature conflicts with the solemn, reflective nature of that liturgical season. It is because of this that it’s reintroduction at Easter is so glorious. So the next time you are at Mass, sing out your Alleluia with unending joy and praise to the One who made everything.
