Paraclete is a title used for the Holy Spirit. It comes from the Greek term for “advocate” and originally meant “one who was called beside.” In this sense, the Holy Spirit was called by Jesus to stay with us and travel the road of faith with us. It is through the Holy Spirit that we receive the graces needed to live a holy life and discern God’s plan for our lives. The Paraclete is a sign that God will never abandon us and is always playing a role in our lives, whether we fully understand what that role is. It is also in this role that the Holy Spirit guides the universal Church, working to ensure that what the Pope and Bishops teach is free from error and that the Church remains true to God’s will. It is an amazing gift that God would come to us in such a special way.
