Why is the Virgin who appeared to St. Juan Diego known as Our Lady of Guadalupe?
When Diego told the bishop about his vision and his wish that a shrine be built there, he described a woman who appared to him as "te qualtaxupe." The bishop's interpreter misunderstood what he heard, and thought Juan was referring to a shrine to the Virgin in Guadalupe, Spain.
Actually, "te qualtaxupe" means "woman who crushes the serpent." Juan Diego believed the woman who had appeared tohim was stronger than a serpent god, the most powerful of all Aztec gods.
